tangled up in blue

help! does anyone know how to get yarn untangled once it's a big mess of knots? i do not know how this happened. but last night, as i worked on trying to finish my scarf, i ended up having to stop and work on untangling the yarn for almost 3 hours. i did not succeed. i got so frustrated that i actually broke the yarn in 3 places and tied it back together, hoping that these little knots won't show once i knit them into the scarf. but there is still so much of it left that is not exactly in knots, but it's close.

has this ever happened to any of my fellow knitting friends? i was almost in tears last night, and i don't feel much better about it today. (obviously it doesn't help that i am awakened by one child or another at least 4 times a night so am working on absolutely no sleep these days...)

ooh. sorry. not that this helps now, but did you roll the skein of yarn into a ball before starting? that will keep the yarn from tangling up. as for untangling it...i'm not much help there. i had to do that once, but fortunately the knots came out. i wonder if instead of knots, you treated each piece like a new skein and knit it in like you would a new skein.

i'm not sure how to treat each piece like a new skein? and no, i didn't roll it into a ball beforehand...it looked like it already was a ball. are there instructions on that knitting website you sent me a while back for both of these things? i'm not too intuitive when it comes to this kind of stuff! :)

Tease it, gently, gently, and never ,ever pull tight when trying to untangle, it only makes thing worse. It's a nightmare I know. You just have to take a very deep breath and follow that little tangled strand all the way through. (or just break it and knot it !! I've done this too when not feeling so patient and it doesn't really show if you try to get the knots on the wrong side of your knitting..)
Hope you get it sorted.
By the way I started some lacy knitting last night and had to rip back and fix the 2nd row (89 stitches of mohair) twice, before I got it right. I feel your knitting pain (and tiredness!)

asti thanks for the encouragement. i actually was successful last night. you are right--i had been making the mistake of pulling instead of being gentle.

good luck with your project--here's to hoping you don't encounter any more ripping and fixing!

I don't know any more about getting knots out than you, however every time I read something about you knitting it makes me think of how much I want to start quilting. I have always had this little dream in my head about making these amazingly creative quilts. Hmmm...maybe someday...
