strawberry season

it's one of my favorite things about living in florida (and, oddly enough, my list of favorites isn't that long...): strawberry season starts in january.

rhys is addicted to these sweet, juicy berries. right now, i have 3 fresh packages in the fridge, and if i open the door when he's nearby and can see them, he immediately starts hollering to have some. i swear, if i let him, he would eat them until he was sick. or had a rash. or both.

with the upcoming "artic blast" that, believe it or not, will make its way even to our sunny coastline tonight and tomorrow night, the strawberry crops are in jeopardy. farmers will be up all night, tending to their red babies, fretting, worrying, hoping they won't freeze literally to death.

so while most of the country is dealing with sub-zero temps, we're worried about the berry crops and wondering what we will do if the temperature dips below 32...

I grew up across from a strawberry farm in Indiana. Often in the spring we would worry about a freeze. They would always turn on the irrigation & water the berries through the danger zone. I guess the continuous water keeps them from freezing somehow.

Your post reminds me that I need to use the strawberries I froze from last summer :)

we had strawberries for dessert tonight (ok let me rephrase that the kids had them) to commemorate the post re: the apron!
